Handmade Primitive Dolls and Ornaments
Just added to the Old World Primitives Etsy Shop – a primitive folk art sheep doll.

This primitive sheep doll is made of heavily coffee stained muslin. He has a painted black head, vintage cotton batting tail, and antique rusty nails for legs. He wears a poem printed on heavily stained, torn paper that has been attached with two pieces of twine with some sweet annie tucked behind it. This primitive sheep is a Kentucky Primitives design, and measures 8.5″ long by 7.5″ tall.
Today marks Old World Primitives’ first Blogiversary, so to celebrate, I am going to be giving away the prize package below. The winner will receive each item pictured – a primitive basket (13″ long x 7″ high), a Bethany Lowe old fashioned tissue paper garland, a 6″ tin mustard barn star, a set of 3 ceramic willow jars, and a set of 6 vintage style chenille Easter ornaments – handmade by Old World Primitives.

This weekend I went to the 23rd annual “Antiques in Long Valley” show in Long Valley, NJ and left with a fantastic find! I purchased a circa 1870s chimney cupboard with original dark blue paint. I think it is a rare and beautiful find and am very excited about it. Plus, it fits perfectly into the empty spot in my blue living room next to a barnwood cabinet that I have been looking to fill.
There were so many other items at this show that I wished I could have bought too – I could easily have left with a U-Haul filled with goodies if I had the means. There was absolutely no junk at this show, and in some booths I wanted just about every item in them. I just missed a lovely antique doll with a lithographed face that was in excellent condition – a dealer at another antique store that I shop at got to her first, and is keeping her for her personal collection.
My Mom picked up a wonderful late 19th century German cloth doll with a tin head. I told her that if she didn’t buy her, I was going to have to (and I had already spent enough!). The doll still has a tattered, aged piece of paper pinned beneath her clothes with a handwritten note of who she once belonged to.
The bunnies are back once more, just in time to welcome spring! The primitive bunnies in a cabbage leaf garden are available now in the Old World Primitives Etsy shop.
This primitive garden vignette was handmade by Old World Primitives using a Kentucky Primitives design. The bunnies, carrots, and turnips are made of muslin stuffed with natural fibers that have been painted, stained, sanded, and grungied with cinnamon. The cabbage leaf is made of two layers of painted, stained, and cinnamon dusted muslin. It also has a stuffed stem and a few wire “spines” between the leaf layers to help it hold its shape. The primitive bunnies have antique rusty square nails for legs, vintage cotton batting tails, and hand sewn eyes and noses.
Old World Primitives has been updated for February 7th with the primitive doll pictured below.

I recently took part in the Cloth and Clay Doll workshop offered by Gritty Arts Studio, and created this doll during the workshop. I have discovered that I absolutely love working with Paperclay on top of a cloth doll body, and definitely plan to make more dolls with sculpted faces in the future! The primitive doll pictured above is also hand painted and antiqued. I also have some more goodies in the works that will be added to the Old World Primitives Etsy shop soon too.
I just added a new extreme primitive doll to the Old World Primitives Etsy Shop. She is rag stuffed and wears calico angel wings and a chicken tag. I also gave her mismatched vintage button eyes, a very serious mouth, and a single tuft of hair to complete her extreme prim look. She was created using a Netty LaCroix design and is a big 32″ long. I received a most exciting package last night – two historically inspired chandeliers handmade by Yankee Crossing. I had been longing to replace some of the modern-looking ceiling fan light fixtures in my home with some 18th century style chandeliers ever since I discovered Yankee Crossing, who were featured last year in the Early American Life Directory of Traditional American Crafts. Here are some photos that I snapped of my new goodies (not yet installed):
The colors of each chandelier are a perfect match for my bedroom and dining room, respectively.
I just added a new set of 6 vintage style chenille Easter ornaments to the Old World Primitives Etsy Shop. The set includes two of each ornament style pictured below. These chenille ornaments are an Old World Primitives design, and are made of chenille plus vintage paper scrap Easter images printed on card stock.
Also, I am honored to announce that my primitive crow doll a few posts below is featured on Today’s Primitive Home today. The women who run the site feature “exceptional, distinctive, OOAK handcrafted American Folk Art created by contemporary American Artisans, for your Primitive, Early American and Colonial style home” as a wonderful free service to the primitive community. They have a giveaway running now for an 18th Century Reproduction Wall Box (and I reeeeeally want to win!).

I just finished filling the Old World Primitives WSOAPP Shoppe with some new goodies for our January 7th update. The first item that I added is a primitive heart make-do. It is wrapped with painted and stained cheesecloth that I have filled with stained vintage and Valentine images plus a sprig of sweet annie. A stained white dove also flies over the heart. The cheesecloth is secured by a rusty safety pin and some stained vintage lace ric-rac tied in a bow.

My second new item is a primitive doll called Sweet Annie Love Letters. She and the heart make-do were both created using Veena’s Mercantile patterns. Sweet Annie will fit in nicely with either Valentine’s Day or everyday decor.
